DIY CLEANING RECIPES
Using Bicarb of Soda: good for cleaning, cutting through grease, restoring shine and eliminating foul odours.

- Fridge and freezer: fill a small container with bicarb soda and place in the corner of the fridge and freezer to absorb smells and purify the air. Replace monthly.
- Bathroom: sprinkle bicarb soda around bathtub, shower and sink (enamel), ensuring surfaces are relatively dry and that a light covering is seen across all surfaces, and scrub with sponge/cloth – may need some elbow grease! Use 2-3 drops of essential oil or a teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice sprinkled over the bicarb of soda (before scrubbing) to create fresh smells. Wash off with warm water and
- Pots and Pans: sprinkle on grimy/dirty pans and add 1/4 – ½ teaspoon of bicarb to make a paste and use elbow grease to raise grime/difficult to remove food. Refer to use of vinegar below for stubborn stains.
- Using White Vinegar – a mild disinfectant
- Windows: pour ratio of 2 tablespoons of vinegar into ½ cup (250ml) of water into spray bottle. Use this spray onto windows and polish with newspaper or recycled paper towel.
- Pots and Pans: pour 2 tablespoons of vinegar and 1/4 - 1/2 cup water into burned saucepans and leave overnight to make it easier to clean in morning. See reference to use of bicarb of soda above.
- Toilet bowls: leave half a cup (250ml) vinegar in the loo bowl overnight to be used as a disinfectant then flush next day. See also reference to bicarb soda above for loos.
- Washing machine (top loader only): fill empty washing machine with hot water, then add ¼ cup of white vinegar and one cup (250ml) of Epsom Salts. Ensure you agitate/stir the machine for a minute, then allow to soak in machine for the hour before finishing the cycle. This will reduce/remove unwanted build-up of residue in the washing machine and keep it running more efficiently.
